Each year, the State Coaching Panel organizes a number of workshops, seminars and clinics in order to aid and promote the development of Pony Club Coaches, Examiners and Riders.


ENJOY HEALTHY EATING COACHING THE COACHES
with Philippa Collier

The Enjoy Healthy Eating Coaching the Coaches Clinics (Flatwork), held in 2004 & 2005 were conducted in all Zones around the State by Mrs Nadine Merewether. These very successful clinics were made possible by generous support from Healthway and the Cancer Foundation.

Many Coaches as well potential Coaches gained from Mrs Merewether's knoweldge and skills, and are know applying the newly learnt skills to their own Pony Club situations.

In 2004 & 2005, this programme will be repeated, this time focusing on Showjumping and Eventing. The Mentor Coach for this programme will be Mrs Philippa Collier.

The Zones to host the Enjoy Healthy Eating Coaching the Coaches - Showjuming & Eventing Clinics in 2005 are West Coastal, Northern, Great Southern, South West and Midlands.


PCAWA 'D' COACHING CERTIFICATE

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • Attending and completing two approved coaching schools, one of which must be an Orientation to Coaching Course (for parents and potential coaches) conducted by a Visiting Commissioner of the PCAWA.
  • Coaching at a minimum of six rallies over a minimum period of six months.
  • Having a Record of Coaching Practice book Book showing the sequence of these lessons - to be inspected by the Visiting Commissioner, Zone Assistant or Club Coach Co-ordinator.
  • Be familiar with the contents of the following books:
    The Australian Pony Club Council Syllabus of Instruction
    The Australian Pony Club Council Manual of Instruction up to C Level
    Horsemastership for the Australian Rider (Kay Irving)
    The New Zealand Pony Club Manual No. 1
  • Being capable of teaching Pony Club riders to D Efficiency Level.

Being recommended by the Club and the Zone.

PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW WHEN APPLYING FOR A D COACHING CERTIFICATE

  • Complete application form (included in this section)
  • Record of Coaching Practice Book to Visiting Commissioner, Club Coach Co-ordinator or Zone Assistant for assessment and signature.
  • Application form is presented at Club's Committee meeting for recommendation and recording in Minutes. Club Coach Co-ordinator and Club President/Secretary to sign where indicated.
  • Presented at Zone Coaching Panel Meeting by Club representative for recommendation to Zone and recording in Minutes. Zone Assistant and Zone President/Secretary to sign where indicated.
  • Forwarded to PCAWA Headquarters for presentation to the State Coaching Panel for recommendation to Council.
  • Presented to Council for approval and recording in the Council Minutes. 


ORIENTATION TO PONY CLUB AND COACHING SCHOOLS

The Orientation to Coaching Course replaces the previous Parents' & Potential Instructors' Schools (Course 1)

The course is for parents and potential coaches who may wish to learn more about the Pony Club movement and the care of the horse and pony. Parents who do not wish to become involved in coaching need not attend the Coaching topics during the Course. A Certificate of Participation will be awarded to all who complete this course (100% attendance).

To be eligible to undertake an Orientation to Pony Club and Coaching Course, you must:-

  • Be a current financial member of a Pony Club affiliated with the Pony Club Association of Western Australia Inc. and INCLUDED ON ANNUAL STRENGTH RETURNS

Complete an application form.

ORIENTATION TO PONY CLUB AND COACHING COURSES

The Orientation to Pony Club and Coaching Courses will be conducted at Zone level, by PCAWA Visiting Commissioners.

Once a date (or dates) has been set, in conjunction with the Visiting Commissioner, the Zone can provide the necessary application forms for coaches, the date/s can be advertised within the Zone, and through the PCAWA so coaches in other Zones can attend.

The PCAWA must be informed of courses to be held, and a report from the Course Presenter must be provided to the PCAWA. This report will include details of the names of those participating and whether each participant completed the entire course, or only part thereof. The PCAWA is required by the Australian Coaching Council to keep computer records of all courses held and those who participated.

Topics completed in this way will be held in credit for a period of 18 months.


PC-NCAS LEVEL 1 ACCREDITATION

Through the Australian Pony Club Council, the Pony Club Association of Western Australia has been granted accreditation to conduct the NCAS Programme, which is a National scheme, run in conjunction with the Australian Coaching Council.

The PCAWA does not have the authority to vary the requirements, and all candidates must comply with the regulations laid down. Exemptions from various Topics in the courses may apply, for example if a Coaching Principles Certificate, a Certificate of Equine Management, British Horse Society qualifications, etc have already been attained.

Written confirmation of these qualifications must be presented to the PCAWA when applying to undertake the Level 1 courses. If you have any queries about previous qualifications, please contact PCAWA Headquarters.

Satisfactory completion of these Courses will enable a coach to confidently teach riders at C Certificate level at Pony Club.

In brief, to attain a Level 1 Coaching Certificate a candidate must:

  • Hold a PCAWA D Instructor's Certificate
  • complete 100% attendance at
    1. A PC NCAS Level 1 Part 1 Course
    2. A PC NCAS Level 1 Part 2 Course
  • have a Log Book signed and inspected
  • be assessed while coaching C Level Pony Club riders, on the flat and over jumps and in horsemastershp, preferably at the coach's own Pony Club
  • attain a 80% pass mark in a short, multiple choice questionnaire
  • have a record of six months' coaching at Pony Club.
  • hold a current Senior First Aid Certificate

NCAS LEVEL 1

There are two parts of the NCAS Level 1:

(i) Part One Course

This Course must be completed before the Part Two Course can be undertaken.

(ii) Part Two Course

These courses have been designed by the Australian Pony Club Council to provide Coaches who wish to coach at Pony Club with the special skills required when coaching children. It encompasses the recommended Pony Club methods for teaching horsemanship and horsemastership up to C Certificate level.

They cover the general aspects to regulate the coaching and examination process and coordinate a national profile for the purpose of standardisation for coaches and riders within the sport.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to undertake the NCAS Level 1 Courses, a candidate must

1. Hold a PCAWA D Coaching Certificate

2. Be aged 18 years or over on completion of the course.

3. Be a member of a Pony Club affiliated with the PCAWA.

A candidate cannot undertake the Pony Club NCAS Level 1 courses unless they are a current financial member of a Pony Club in Western Australia, which is affiliated with the PCAWA. Such membership also ensures that a candidate is covered for insurance (including public liability) while they are attending the various sessions of the course.

4. Have coached or be coaching at a Pony Club for a minimum of six months.

In order to gain Pony Club NCAS Level 1 Accreditation, a candidate must complete six months of coaching at a Pony Club. This can be completed prior to, during, or after taking part in the Level 1 Accreditation, but the Certificate cannot be awarded until this requirement has been fulfilled.

5. Candidates must have read the relevant reference material

The following reference materials are compulsory:

. Australian Pony Club Council Syllabus of Instruction (current version) . New Zealand Pony Club Manual of Instruction, Nos 1, 2 and 3 . British Horse Society Manual of Horsemanship

Additional reference materials are optional:

. APCC Manual of Instruction to C Level (K Irving) . Australian Coaching Council "Beginning Coaching" . "Ride Safely" (PCAWA publication) . Rule Books for Pony Club competition PCAWA Gear Checking Manual

Other reference materials are recommended and a list of these is contained in the Syllabus for the Level 1 - Pony Club Part Two Course.

6. Course Fees

The Course Fee is set from time to time. The Course Fee will include the cost of the Course Syllabus and Log Book, which are compulsory.

The fee may vary if a candidate wishes to attend the course in sessions due to additional administration costs.
